Employee Spotlight: Glen Compton, avid musician, gamer, and our first Yooper hire!

Tell us a little about yourself.

Well, as far as technology goes, I first got into programming at 9 years old. My cousin gave me a commodore 64 + some computer magazines and they used to have source code in the back that was basically a free game. If you had the patience to type it in and record it on a tape cassette (remember those?) One of my favorite parts was I loved messing with the code and seeing what effects it had on the game itself. After that, I thought I wanted to be a computer engineer – found that after a few electrical engineering classes (and a few programming classes) I wasn’t as interested in the hardware side of things and felt like I was able to make a much bigger impact with code – the rest is history! I live in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and have two kids who take up most of my time when I’m not working – my youngest, Jack is 7 and my Daughter Deandra is 12.

What brought you to fivestar*?

I really like the types of projects that you work on – there’s a ton of variety in both project type and technology used. I’m mostly excited to start learning, there’s so many different things to learn and they’re all in alignment with my goals in terms of growing as a developer. They’re all an extension of what I was doing but include new things as well.

What are you most excited to get started on?

I’m really curious to see how a new group of people use the same tools that I have in different ways – can’t wait to collaborate and get to learn and understand their processes and approach. There’s so much learning that can happen in these early stages and I am just excited to get to pick everyone’s brain and approach things in a way that I have not before.

Describe your role as a developer

As a full-stack developer, I will be working through development efforts from planning to execution and helping our clients use technology to solve their problems but to get back to what I was talking about earlier – I’m really excited to learn how to use the same tools that I’ve been using differently. I am excited to bring new perspectives to the team and learn new perspectives from them to create to grow as a developer.

What are your hobbies?

Guitar, bass, drums, video games, ‘vintage’ wrestling, collecting comic books (I currently have between 5 and 6 thousand comics). I’ve got a whole lot of hobbies, but not a lot of time now. Most of my free time is spent with my kids, so I guess my most recent hobby is virtual learning with them.

What’s a unique fact about yourself?

I built this guitar from the ground up about a year and a half ago. Check it out!
