Turning Systems into Something Teams Can Rely On

Reflections from fivestar*’s Infor CRM SLX User Group Session

There’s no shortage of technology. Organizations already have the systems, the data, and the ability to build dashboards and automate work, but something still feels off.

Much of the conversation pointed to something teams experience every day.

  • Systems don’t quite connect
  • Data exists, but isn't fully trusted
  • Processes technically work but create friction in practice.
  • Across systems, the same pattern shows up, systems don’t quite connect, data exists but isn’t fully trusted, and processes technically work, but create friction in practice.

The discussion stayed grounded in how to make what’s already there work better.

Where Progress Actually Starts

One of the more grounded takeaways from the session was where the work happens, getting clear on what matters before introducing tools, platforms, or new technology.

  • What are you trying to improve?
  • Where is time being lost?
  • What decisions are harder than they should be?

Without clear answers to those questions, it’s easy to build something that functions, but doesn’t move the business forward.

That’s why the approach emphasized refining requirements early, prioritizing what matters, and testing ideas with stakeholders before scaling them.

It’s a more disciplined way of working, but it avoids a common outcome: investing time and energy into systems that don’t quite solve the right problem.

Why Data Still Feels Disconnected

Even with the right intent, data remains one of the biggest challenges. Not because it’s unavailable, but because it’s rarely unified.

Different systems. Different formats. Different levels of quality.
What should feel like a single source of insight often turns into multiple versions of the same story.

Our session pointed to something many teams will recognize: a significant number of organizations still rely on spreadsheets to analyze critical data.

That’s not necessarily a failure; it’s often a starting point.

But it highlights a larger issue. When data isn’t structured, connected, and accessible in the right way, it limits what teams can do with it. Insights take longer to find. Decisions take longer to make. Confidence in the numbers starts to fade.

Closing that gap comes down to creating a clearer path between systems, data, and the people using it.

Progress Doesn’t Have to Be Complex

One of the more practical parts of the session was how it framed progress.

There isn’t a single “right” way to improve data and reporting. There are multiple paths, and each one depends on where a team is today.

Some teams start with quick wins:

  • Simple exports
  • Early dashboards
  • Lightweight proof-of-concept work

Others move toward more structured environments:

  • Data replication into SQL or centralized systems
  • Integration across CRM, ERP, and operational data
  • More advanced reporting and forecasting

And in between, there’s a middle ground, practical, proven, and often the most realistic starting point for many organizations. The focus is on choosing an approach that fits current needs and creates a path forward.

What This Looks Like in Practice

The value of this approach becomes clearer when applied to real work.

  • Manufacturing: seconds saved → measurable gains at scale.
  • Workforce Development: Better data → clearer, faster career pathways
  • Retail and Operations: simpler systems → less friction, etter execution across locations.

At their core, these are focused improvements that make systems easier to use, data easier to trust, and decisions easier to act on.

Where AI Shows Up Day to Day

AI continues to be part of the conversation, but the approach here was notably grounded.

Instead of pushing for immediate adoption, the focus stayed on:

  • Testing in controlled environments
  • Applying AI to specific, high-impact use cases
  • Validating outputs before expanding
  • Building confidence over time

This approach reflects how organizations adopt new capabilities, with trust developing over time through validation, testing, and real-world application, as teams begin to see how it fits into their workflows and supports the work already happening.

Let’s Keep the Momentum Going

For most organizations, the real opportunity is in systems that connect more clearly, data that’s easier to understand, and workflows that reflect how work happens, bringing stronger alignment to what’s already in place.

If you’re looking at your systems and seeing the same gaps, disconnected data, manual workarounds, or reporting that takes more effort than it should, there’s an opportunity to simplify and strengthen how everything works together.

fivestar* works alongside teams to turn those challenges into practical solutions, whether that’s improving data visibility, connecting systems, or building tools that better support day-to-day work.
